Soul Patch - A skateboarding book by Jacee Juhasz

Photographer and King Skate Mag contributor Jacee Juhasz recently released a book with his photography from the summer of 2020.

Being fans of everything print, we reached out to Jacee to find out a bit more about his project.

Hey Jacee, congrats on the book, looks sick!
You shot all these photos in the summer of 2020, did you notice any differences dealing with security and people in general while shooting these?

Yeah, most of these were shot in the summer when outdoor restrictions were pretty relaxed, but businesses and offices remained closed. So, it gave us a great opportunity to visit those touch-and-go spots downtown that can be problematic with security.

The book looks really high end, can you share a bit about the aesthetic of it?
I would say the photos don’t have too much of a unifying aesthetic. I wanted it to be about the size of a novel, with some heaviness to it. I played with various paper types and settled on a felt stock that I thought could be debossed nicely. For most photos, I tried to accompany the facing page with a more intimate picture of the individual or some sort of innuendo.

A lot of people are making zines these days while traditional mags are printing less and less, where do you think the future of skate photography lies?
It really just falls in the hands of the people contributing and what their intentions are. This project, in particular, is a result of no outlets during a time that has obviously been very difficult for magazines, and I really couldn’t have done this without the help of Vans Canada. It makes sense for photography to naturally transition online, but I really love print, and I hope to see people continue to create and support each other.

If you had to pick your favourite photo from the book, which one would it be?
I’d have to say the two I captured of my friend Dylan Lamy. I hadn’t seen him for over a year at this point, and it's the only time we spent together during the pandemic. Hopefully, this changes soon with the pandemics' end in sight. Tell your friends you love them!

Any random shit happened while shooting the photos for the book?
Nothing too unusual. The weekend we spent in Manseau was pretty chaotic. A four-wheeler (and minds) were flipped.
Where can people buy it?

You can purchase limited copies at the link provided below, as well as the following shops on March 22nd:
Antisocial
Dime
Salle Climatisee

What's next for you?
I have another project in mind for sometime late fall. We’ll see how the rest of this pandemic situation pans out.
