THE BACKSTORY // BOBBY WORREST

This past May, I found myself in Washington, D.C., for 48 hours. With such a short amount of time available, I thought I would make the most of it. I had an idea to shoot a birds-eye photo of people skating Pulaski Park, and so I booked the hotel directly across from the plaza. Now to be clear—I didn't have anything planned, I was just hoping for an artsy photo of the locals skating on a typical afternoon. I checked into the room as a late afternoon session was in full swing. I grabbed my camera, climbed onto the window sill, and began shooting the scene. A few minutes later I noticed that Bobby Worrest was in the mix! I continued to shoot the sesh late into the afternoon, and just before my legs fell asleep, I got this shot of Bobby's 360 Flip Noseslide, framed by the concrete beam. It’s so different shooting photos of “natural” skateboarding. Without that skater/photographer communication, you have no choice but to sit and wait for the photo to show itself. It felt like I had photographed a wild leopard in the jungle.
